Botox vs Filler: What’s the Difference?
Monica Rocha, BSN-RN · July 20, 2026
The short answer: Botox relaxes the muscles that create expression lines, while dermal filler restores volume and structure the face loses over time. They solve different problems, and many plans use one, the other, or both.
What Botox (and other neuromodulators) do
Neuromodulators like Botox and Dysport temporarily relax specific muscles so the skin above them creases less. They’re best for dynamic lines — the frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet that appear with movement.
What dermal filler does
Filler is a gel that adds support and volume where the face has lost it: cheeks, midface, jawline, chin, lips, and under-eye hollows. It restores structure and proportion rather than relaxing muscle.
How to tell which you need
If your concern shows up when you make expressions, it’s usually a job for a neuromodulator. If it’s about flatness, hollowing, or lost definition at rest, it’s usually a filler question. A consultation is the reliable way to match the right tool to your goal.
Can you get both?
Yes. Many natural-looking plans combine relaxed expression lines with restored structure. The key is a conservative, anatomy-first plan tailored to your face.
